BPI Launches Digital Infrastructure Development Platform in Upper Egypt
BPI is expanding its infrastructure development platform into digital infrastructure, with the launch of a new initiative to develop a renewable-powered data-center campus in Upper Egypt.
The initiative is centered on a 420-hectare site originally assigned to BPI by Cabinet decision in 2015, which BPI subsequently developed with BayWa r.e. as a pioneering 420-MW private-to-private renewable-energy project.
Following the subsequent reallocation of the original site by the State and the withdrawal of BayWa r.e. from further development, BPI is now repositioning this substantial development asset for renewable-powered digital infrastructure, in response to the rapidly growing requirements for hyperscale, cloud, AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.
The Benchmark Data Center Concept
The proposed Benchmark Data Center is conceived as a scalable digital-infrastructure campus integrating:
- Solar renewable-energy generation
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Dedicated electrical infrastructure and substations
- Private-wire power infrastructure
- Grid connection for redundancy, balancing and additional capacity
- High-capacity telecommunications and fiber-optic connectivity
- AI-ready, hyperscale and high-performance computing data-center infrastructure
The architecture is intended to provide a flexible platform in which renewable generation; energy storage and reliable electrical supply are integrated directly with the data-center load.

A Scalable Digital Infrastructure Campus
BPI envisages the development of the campus in a scalable configuration, allowing data-center capacity to expand progressively in response to market demand, power availability and project economics.
The platform is being conceived to support hyperscale cloud, AI and high-performance computing requirements, with the potential for substantial expansion of IT capacity over time.
The campus would comprise three principal infrastructure zones:
Zone A — Renewable Generation & Energy Storage
Solar renewable-energy generation, BESS and dedicated electrical infrastructure designed to support reliable and increasingly renewable-powered data-center operations.
Zone B — Data Centers
Scalable, AI-ready data-center facilities designed to accommodate hyperscale, cloud and high-performance computing customers.
Zone C — Digital Connectivity
High-capacity fiber-optic connectivity, telecommunications infrastructure and carrier-neutral network facilities supporting domestic, regional and international digital traffic.
BPI's Role and Strategic Partnership
BPI intends to develop the platform in partnership with experienced international digital-infrastructure companies and institutional investors.
BPI brings to the platform:
- Strategic land and development assets
- Renewable-energy and power-infrastructure development experience
- Local project development capability
- Established relationships with Egyptian governmental and institutional stakeholders
- Infrastructure development and project coordination expertise
Strategic partners are expected to contribute:
- Data-center technology, design and engineering
- Development and operational expertise
- Hyperscale, cloud and AI customer relationships
- Digital connectivity and network expertise
- Institutional capital and investment capabilities
BPI is therefore actively exploring strategic partnerships with leading international digital-infrastructure, technology and data-center companies to establish the Benchmark Data Center as a scalable platform for next-generation digital infrastructure in Egypt.
A New BPI Infrastructure Platform
The initiative represents a further expansion of BPI's infrastructure-development platform, building on its experience in large-scale power and renewable-energy projects and its current development of the Benchmark Suez Green Ammonia Project, while extending BPI's activities into the rapidly evolving fields of digital infrastructure, AI and data centers.
BPI's objective is to develop a scalable, renewable-powered digital-infrastructure platform in Egypt, bringing together land, power, connectivity, international technology and institutional investment to support the country's emerging role as a regional digital hub.
